In 1916, William A. Noyes, (pronounced “noise”), the head of the chemistry department, argued successfully for an addition to be built to house the largest chemistry department in the United States. The roster of scientists who studied or taught at Noyes Laboratory reads like a Who’s Who of American chemistry. It includes 10 Nobel Prize winners; 23 presidents of the American Chemical Society; and 12 winners of the Priestley Medal.
